sports and
social facilities for Watlington and surrounding communities
|
|

Watlington is a
great place to live and work. It has all the best qualities of living in a
small country town with historic buildings, superb Chiltern countryside, good
local facilities and shops. At the heart of Watlington is the Watlington
Memorial Club, and hidden behind
it a treasure of sports facilities.
The
Club boasts a membership of over 700 who make full use of the on-site
sporting and games facilities - Tennis, Racquetball, Squash, Bowls, and
Snooker. Inside the main building, we have the main Community Hall and
kitchen and lounge/bars area which act as a social focus with services when
required, for members, non members and for functions.

Our
previous Chairman, Nathan Buckland, has died after a long battle with
cancer.
He
was a stalwart of the club for many years, giving his hands-on approach to
both social club and charity.
Our
thoughts and condolences go to Julie and the family

CHAIRMAN
STEPS DOWN
At the AGM on 21st September, Miriam Wilcock announced
her retirement from the charity committee after steering the club from uncertain future and finances
5 years ago into a position of forward looking stability. Quite an
achievement!
Robin
Holmes-Smith, Vice-chairman, has taken over the role for the time being,
but in the longer term, he and his committee are keen for “new blood” to
provide fresh ideas and experience in running the charity.

The club front has had a
much needed facelift and renovations to the windows. We hope that this will
give members a High Street frontage to be proud of!

THE
BAR
The WMC & its members were thrilled when Curly
Coles and his family took over in autumn 2008, bringing their expertise and
long tradition as landlords in Watlington to our own bars.
They are now hosting the darts
team, providing Aunt Sally and pool, and provide support for functions when
required.
The bars are once more the
perfect place for a purely social drink or for thirsty squash & tennis
players and bowlers alike!
Specific catering and bar
arrangements in association with events in the hall & Georgian room bar
can be organised either through the WMC or the bar.
